A fumigant is a volatile chemical used to control pests by filling an enclosed space with toxic gas. Fumigation targets pests at all life stages in structures, soils, or stored commodities, and can penetrate porous materials to reach hidden organisms. The process requires sealed conditions and careful exposure management to balance efficacy with human and environmental safety.

Common fumigants include phosphine, usually generated from metal phosphides, and sulfuryl fluoride; methyl bromide is another historic fumigant that is largely phased out because of ozone-depletion concerns. Chloropicrin and other irritants are sometimes used in combination to enhance efficacy or pest detection. Selection depends on pest, commodity, and regulatory constraints.

Applications encompass soil fumigation before crops, storage-structure and commodity fumigation in silos, mills, and transport containers, and structural fumigation for buildings. Methods include tent fumigation, chamber fumigation, and soil injection. Efficacy depends on concentration, exposure time, temperature, humidity, and pest susceptibility; operations are guided by target CT values, safety limits, and labeling.

Safety and regulation: fumigants are highly toxic to humans and non-target organisms. Handling requires trained personnel, proper licensing, leak monitoring, ventilation, and personal protective equipment. After treatment, residues and gas clearance must be verified. Regulatory frameworks govern usage, with methyl bromide heavily restricted and other fumigants subject to product-specific requirements.

Environmental considerations include potential atmospheric release, effects on air quality, and impacts on non-target wildlife. Some fumigants persist in soil or grain and require containment. Pests may develop resistance, and fumigant choices are weighed against material compatibility, cost, and availability; integrated pest management often combines fumigation with non-chemical controls.
