Frontotemporaalse refers to the frontotemporal region of the brain, encompassing the frontal lobes and the temporal lobes and their connected networks. This region underpins a range of higher cognitive and social functions, including executive processes, language, emotion, and behavior. The frontal lobes support planning, decision making, and impulse control, while the temporal lobes contribute to auditory processing, language comprehension, and memory. Networks linking these areas with the insula, cingulate cortex, and other regions enable flexible, goal-directed behavior and social cognition.

The term is often encountered in discussions of frontotemporal neuroanatomy and related disorders. Diseases that preferentially affect the frontotemporal region can produce early changes in personality, behavior, or language, with memory impairment typically appearing later or being less prominent than in some other dementias. The frontotemporal area can be involved unilaterally or bilaterally, and patterns of atrophy or hypometabolism help distinguish subtypes.

In clinical practice, frontotemporaalse is most closely associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative conditions. Key subtypes include behavioral-variant FTD, characterized by marked changes in social conduct and personality; semantic variant primary progressive aphasia, with impaired word comprehension and naming; and nonfluent/agrammatic variant PPA, with effortful speech and grammar difficulties. Genetic forms involve mutations in genes such as MAPT, GRN, or C9orf72 and may affect onset in midlife.

Diagnosis combines clinical assessment, neuropsychological testing, and brain imaging. MRI or CT often shows frontal and/or temporal atrophy, while PET can reveal reduced metabolism in these regions. Treatment is supportive and multidisciplinary, focusing on communication strategies, behavior management, and symptom relief, with prognosis varying by subtype and individual trajectory.
