The primary purpose of a formpäevik is to document day-to-day classroom activities and to support planning, continuity, and communication. Typical entries cover attendance, topics or lessons taught, homework assignments, brief notes on student participation and progress, behavior observations, health or attendance issues, reminders, and important announcements. It also often includes a log of communications with parents and upcoming deadlines or events.

Contents commonly found in a formpäevik include date, presence or absence, a short summary of what was covered in each class, assigned homework, remarks on student engagement, notes on any incidents or exceptional circumstances, records of parent contacts, and suggested next steps or follow-up actions.

Process and privacy considerations are important. Entries are usually made by the form teacher after or between classes. Access is typically restricted to teachers, school administrators, and (where applicable) guardians via secure platforms. Data protection and retention policies govern how long records are kept and who may view them.

Relation to other records: formpäevik supports, but does not replace, individual student portfolios and formal progress reports. It serves as a practical, day-to-day tool for teachers to monitor class dynamics and plan instruction, while also providing a traceable history of a form’s activities.
