footbed

A footbed is the interior surface of a shoe that directly contacts the sole of the foot. It is the layer that provides cushioning and, in many designs, arch and heel support. In common usage, footbed can be synonymous with the insole, but manufacturers sometimes reserve “footbed” for an anatomically contoured or orthotic-friendly insert that remains in place if removable, or is molded into the shoe.

Materials and construction vary widely. Footbeds may be made of foam, EVA, cork, leather, or fabric coverings,

Removable footbeds allow cleaning, replacement, or customization, while fixed footbeds are integrated into the shoe’s midsole.

Care and replacement: Footbeds compress over time, losing cushioning and support. Signs of wear include flattening
