Food production is the set of activities that produce edible products for human consumption. The food system involves multiple actors, including farmers, processors, distributors, retailers, food-service providers, regulators, and consumers. Food safety and quality are maintained through standards, inspections, traceability, and risk management practices such as HACCP and allergen controls. Globally, production scales with demand, with innovations in genetics, agronomy, and processing driving efficiency and resilience.

Sustainability considerations address yield, resource use (water, energy, land), waste reduction, and the environmental footprint of production. Waste from processing and distribution, if not recovered, reduces overall efficiency. Emerging trends include precision agriculture, alternative proteins, urban and vertical farming, and shorter, more localized supply chains.

Assessment of food production also considers nutrition, affordability, and access, aiming to ensure safe, reliable, and adequate food supplies for populations, while balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives.
