Common features include the use of acoustic instruments such as guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle; emphasis on melody and clear, often narrative lyrics; close vocal harmonies; and a rustic or pastoral sonic mood. Folkinfluenced works may blend folk with indie rock, pop, country, or experimental sounds, while maintaining traditional folk idioms in melody, rhythm, or storytelling.

Historically, the descriptor grew from the folk revival of the mid-20th century and has been applied retrospectively to classic folk artists as well as to contemporary acts. Folkinfluenced as a label signals a bridging of traditional folk aesthetics with modern tastes. It often indicates an emphasis on storytelling and acoustic textures rather than loud electric production. Some observers see it as a helpful descriptive term; others caution that it can be vaguer and less informative than more specific genre labels.
