The term combines *fokus* (focus or concentration) and *seerida* (to see or foresee), indicating the act of gaining insight through heightened perception or trance-like states. Practitioners, often called *fokusseerijad* (fortune-tellers or seers), employed various methods to interpret omens, predict events, or communicate with spirits.

Common techniques included reading natural signs such as bird behavior, weather patterns, or the flight of arrows (a practice called *noolevaatamine*). Another method involved interpreting the shapes formed by smoke rising from burning herbs or the arrangement of objects like nuts or bones.
