Fogszabályzó, often referred to as braces, is a dental appliance used to correct misaligned teeth and jaws. Its primary purpose is to improve the bite, enhance the appearance of the smile, and promote better oral hygiene. The process of using fogszabályzó is typically overseen by an orthodontist, a dental specialist who focuses on correcting these issues.

The most common type of fogszabályzó consists of brackets, which are small pieces of metal or ceramic that are bonded to the surface of each tooth. These brackets have slots through which a thin metal wire, known as an archwire, is threaded. The archwire is held in place by small elastic bands, called ligatures, which can be clear or colored. There are also other types of fogszabályzó available, including clear aligners. These are custom-made, transparent trays that fit over the teeth and are replaced every few weeks with a new set. Clear aligners offer a more discreet option for orthodontic treatment. The duration of treatment with fogszabályzó varies depending on the complexity of the case, but it commonly ranges from 12 to 24 months. Regular appointments with the orthodontist are necessary to adjust the appliances and monitor progress. Once treatment is complete, a retainer is usually worn to maintain the corrected position of the teeth.
