fietsbanen
Fietsbanen are lanes on public roads reserved for bicycles. In Dutch traffic design, fietsbanen form part of the roadway and provide cyclists with a dedicated, predictable space within mixed traffic. They are common in the Netherlands and Belgium and are marked on the road surface or separated by markings, in contrast to separate cycle paths (fietspaden) that run alongside the street.
Design and variants include painted lanes on the roadway (fietsstroken) and, in some cases, protected or semi-protected
Regulation and usage: Motor vehicles are generally not allowed to drive in a fietsbaan, except for turning
Effectiveness and challenges: Well-designed fietsbanen contribute to safer and more predictable cycling, potentially boosting cycling uptake.
