Fietsbanen are lanes on public roads reserved for bicycles. In Dutch traffic design, fietsbanen form part of the roadway and provide cyclists with a dedicated, predictable space within mixed traffic. They are common in the Netherlands and Belgium and are marked on the road surface or separated by markings, in contrast to separate cycle paths (fietspaden) that run alongside the street.

Design and variants include painted lanes on the roadway (fietsstroken) and, in some cases, protected or semi-protected configurations using curbs, bollards, or parked vehicles to create a buffer between cyclists and motor traffic. They can be one-way or two-way depending on street layout. Urban projects may use colored surfacing, such as red or green, to highlight the cycling lane and improve visibility.

Regulation and usage: Motor vehicles are generally not allowed to drive in a fietsbaan, except for turning maneuvers or accessing adjacent properties. Cyclists have a designated space within the lane and possess priority in many situations, with drivers required to yield at intersections and when turning. Traffic signs and road markings guide behavior and lane boundaries.

Effectiveness and challenges: Well-designed fietsbanen contribute to safer and more predictable cycling, potentially boosting cycling uptake. However, conflicts can arise at intersections, where turning vehicles may intrude on the lane, or when parked cars and doorings block the path. Maintenance, adequate width, and clear connectivity with other cycling facilities are important for their effectiveness.
