Faryngiitt is the medical term for inflammation of the pharynx, commonly known as a sore throat. It is a frequent ailment that can cause pain, scratchiness, or irritation in the throat, often worsening when swallowing. The pharynx is the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity, above the esophagus and larynx.

The causes of faryngiitt are varied but are most often infectious. Viral infections are the most common culprits, including those responsible for the common cold and influenza. Bacterial infections, particularly Group A Streptococcus, can also cause faryngiitt, leading to strep throat, which may require antibiotic treatment. Less common causes include allergies, dry air, irritants like smoke or pollution, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Symptoms of faryngiitt can include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, red and swollen tonsils, white patches or streaks of pus on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Fever, headache, and body aches may also be present, especially with viral or bacterial infections.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history and physical examination. A rapid strep test or throat culture may be performed to identify bacterial infections. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral faryngiitt usually resolves on its own and is managed with rest, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Bacterial faryngiitt, such as strep throat, requires antibiotics prescribed by a healthcare professional. Home remedies like gargling with warm salt water and drinking warm liquids can provide symptomatic relief for both types.
