Fabric softening is a process used to improve the feel and handling of textiles. It aims to make fabrics feel smoother, softer, and more pliable, reducing stiffness and making them more comfortable against the skin. This can be achieved through various methods, both during manufacturing and by consumers at home.

In industrial textile production, fabric softening is often a finishing step. This can involve mechanical processes like calendering, where fabrics are passed through heated rollers to compress and smooth fibers, or tumbling, where fabrics are agitated in a heated drum to break down fiber bonds and create a softer texture. Chemical softeners can also be applied, which coat the fabric fibers with lubricants or surfactants. These agents reduce friction between fibers, leading to a softer feel. Common chemical softeners include silicone emulsions, fatty acid derivatives, and quaternary ammonium compounds.

Consumers commonly use fabric softeners in laundry. Liquid fabric softeners are added to the rinse cycle of a washing machine. They contain surfactants that deposit onto fabric fibers, reducing static cling and making clothes feel softer. Dryer sheets, used in clothes dryers, serve a similar purpose. They release softening agents and fragrances as the clothes tumble, reducing static and adding a pleasant scent. While effective, some individuals may experience skin irritation from residual softeners, and certain types of fabrics, like microfiber or athletic wear, may not benefit from or can even be negatively affected by fabric softening treatments.
