Evitatore is an Italian noun meaning “one who avoids,” derived from the verb evitare. In general use it describes any agent, device, or strategy that seeks to avoid obstacles, threats, or constraints. In technical contexts the term is often applied to obstacle-avoidance systems, sometimes written as “evitatore di ostacoli” or simply “evitatore.”

In robotics and autonomous systems, an evitatore combines sensing, perception, and control to compute maneuvers that prevent collisions while pursuing a goal. It must operate in static or dynamic environments and respect the vehicle’s or robot’s kinematic and dynamic limits. Common approaches include potential-field methods, sampling-based planners (such as RRT or PRM), optimization-based control like model predictive control, and velocity-obstacle or dynamic-window techniques. Implementations typically couple perception (lidar, cameras, radar, or sonars) with real-time planning and low-level actuation.

Beyond robotics, the term can appear in other contexts, such as discussions of evasion in security or surveillance, or in sports and everyday language to describe someone who avoids opponents. In technical writing, however, the more explicit expressions are often preferred, for example “sistema di evitamento ostacoli.”
