A typical enkjøleeenhet comprises a compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion device, refrigerant, and control system. In operation, the refrigerant is compressed to a high pressure and temperature, condensed to release heat, throttled or expanded to lower its pressure, and then evaporated to absorb heat from the space being cooled. The cycle is closed and can be air-cooled or water-cooled, with defrost and temperature regulation features to maintain stable indoor conditions.

Types and applications vary. Stand-alone enkjøleeenheter are common in household refrigerators, freezers, and beverage coolers, while modular or cabinet-mounted units are used in commercial display cases, vending machines, and medical or laboratory refrigerators. Modern units increasingly use low-GWP refrigerants and emphasize energy efficiency, reliability, and noise minimization. Regular maintenance—checking seals, coils, refrigerant levels, and defrost systems—helps sustain performance and prevents leaks.
