The term emphasizes the endpoint role in communication pipelines: end devices produce data or present information to users, and receive data or instructions from other system components. Depending on context, an end device can be connected by wired Ethernet, Wi‑Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, Zigbee, or other media and protocols, typically using IP or application-layer protocols.

Management considerations for end devices include provisioning, software and firmware updates, configuration management, and security practices such as authentication, authorization, and encryption. They may also be exposed to risks such as malware, device tampering, and insecure data collection, requiring ongoing security monitoring and policy enforcement.
