Application layer is the top layer of the OSI model (layer 7) and, in the TCP/IP model, the top layer that provides services directly to end‑user applications. It enables software applications to communicate over a network by exposing network services and offering interfaces to user processes. The layer abstracts the details of data transport and presents a high‑level interface to application programs.

Responsibilities include defining data formats, encoding/decoding, encryption and decryption, authentication, and session management when needed. It handles resource sharing, remote procedure calls, message syntax and semantics, and the negotiation of capabilities between communicating applications. It relies on the underlying transport layer to deliver the messages and on the network to route them.

Typical application-layer protocols include HTTP/HTTPS for web access, FTP for file transfer, SMTP/IMAP/POP3 for email, DNS for name resolution, DHCP for configuring hosts, and SSH/Telnet for remote access. In practice, the TCP/IP model's application layer consolidates many such protocols and relies on transport protocols such as TCP for reliable delivery or UDP for simple, connectionless messaging.

Within the OSI model, the application layer interacts with the presentation and session layers, while in TCP/IP the functions are more loosely defined and the term roughly corresponds to the suite of protocols used by applications. Security features like TLS can operate with application-layer protocols, providing encryption for traffic between clients and servers; however, TLS typically runs between the application and transport layers.

Network security, proxy servers, and application-layer gateways inspect and manage traffic at this layer to enforce policies and filter content. Application-layer performance depends on protocol efficiency, message size, and the capabilities of the host applications.
