Encarecimento, also known as cesarean section or C-section, is a surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus. The term "encarecimento" is primarily used in Latin America, specifically in Brazil and some other Portuguese-speaking countries.

The procedure involves making a horizontal incision in the rectus abdomen muscle, followed by a vertical incision in the uterus. The baby is then carefully removed from the womb and handed to the obstetrician, who compresses the uterus to control bleeding. The incision is typically closed with sutures or staples.

Encarecimento was first performed in the 18th century and became a safer and more widely accepted procedure in the 20th century, particularly after the development of modern surgical techniques and antibiotics. However, with the advancement of medical technology and understanding of obstetrics, the rate of C-sections has increased dramatically, often attributed to various factors, including cesarean rate and maternal benefits.

The benefits and risks of encarecimento, or C-section, are deeply debated. It is widely acknowledged that performing a C-section involves a higher risk of complications for both the mother and the baby. Research has shown that when performed unnecessarily, or where other factors are concerned, C-section may not be entirely advantageous for the mother or the newborn. For these reasons, encarecimento is often considered a last resort in situations where a vaginal delivery is not possible or might pose a risk to the mother or child.

It is estimated that roughly a quarter of births in developed countries are by cesarean section.
