Portuguese-speaking, commonly referred to as the Lusophone world, describes people and communities for whom Portuguese is a primary language for everyday communication or holds official status. The term covers a wide range of dialects and cultural contexts, united by the use of Portuguese in education, media, government, and daily life.

Portuguese is a Romance language developed from Latin, closely related to Spanish and other Ibero-Romance languages. It belongs to the Western branch of Romance languages and has multiple regional varieties, including European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese, along with many local dialects spoken around the world.

Geographically, Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor (Timor-Leste), São Tomé and Príncipe, and, in varying capacities, Equatorial Guinea and Macau. It is commonly used in other Lusophone communities across Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia, reflecting migration and historical ties that extend the language beyond its traditional boundaries.

In terms of speakers, estimates place hundreds of millions of native Portuguese speakers, with total speakers well over 300 million when second-language learners are included. The language exhibits a wide range of pronunciation, vocabulary, and idioms shaped by local cultures, while maintaining shared literary and grammatical features across its variants.

Orthography and standardization have been pursued through international agreements aimed at unifying spelling across Portuguese-speaking countries, even as spoken forms retain regional and national differences. Portuguese also supports a rich literary, musical, and media culture, making it a major vehicle of communication and cultural exchange in the Lusophone world.
