Typical duties include preparing the body for public viewing: cleansing, setting facial features, restoring signs of injury, applying cosmetics, dressing, and casket preparation. The core preservation process usually involves arterial injection of preservative solutions and drainage, followed by cavity treatment to remove internal fluids and replace them with chemicals. Embalmers may also reconstruct facial features, repair missing tissues, and manage the overall presentation of the deceased. After embalming, the body is sealed and prepared for transport or burial.

Training and regulation vary by country and jurisdiction. In many places, aspiring embalmers complete a formal mortuary science or embalming program, undertake an internship or apprenticeship, and pass licensure or certification exams. Ongoing education is commonly required to maintain licensure. Regulatory frameworks govern the use of embalming fluids, facility standards, and professional conduct.

Materials and safety are notable considerations. Embalming typically uses chemical solutions, including formaldehyde-based fluids, along with other agents. Because these substances can emit hazardous fumes, embalmers work in well-ventilated facilities and follow safety and sanitation protocols to limit exposure and properly dispose of waste.

Historically, embalming has roots in ancient practices and evolved into modern techniques in the 19th and 20th centuries, influencing contemporary funeral customs in many regions. Some cultures and situations favor cremation, green burials, or other approaches where embalming is not required.
