Elektrostandarder are formal technical requirements and guidelines for electrical and electronic equipment, installations, and related systems. They cover safety, performance, electromagnetic compatibility, energy efficiency, and interoperability. Developed through international, regional, and national processes, elektrostandarder aim to protect people and property, enable reliable operation, and facilitate trade across markets. The term is commonly used in Scandinavian languages to refer to standards in electrical engineering and electronics.

Organizations and scope. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the main global body producing electrotechnical standards. In Europe, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) develops regional standards, which are adopted as European EN standards and, when harmonized, referenced in EU legislation. National standard bodies translate and publish these standards for their markets. Many elektrostandarder are voluntary, but they may be incorporated by law or regulation, making conformity essential for market access.

Main areas. Elektrostandarder cover a broad range of topics, including electrical safety of products and installations, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and performance criteria. Key examples include standards for electrical installations in buildings, safety standards for household and professional equipment, and EMC test methods. In the IT and medical sectors, safety and interoperability standards similarly guide product design and testing. Environmental and energy-efficiency considerations are increasingly integrated into standards through lifecycle assessments, labeling, and performance criteria.

Development and conformity. Standards are developed by technical committees through a consensus process, including public reviews and voting. Conformity assessment—testing, certification, and documentation—supports market access and regulatory compliance. In the European Union, compliance with harmonized elektrostandarder often enables CE marking and smoother cross-border trade.
