Elektrikääsmeteks, often translated as "electric eels," are not true eels but are actually a type of knifefish. These fascinating aquatic animals are native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in South America. They are renowned for their remarkable ability to generate powerful electric shocks.

There are three recognized species of electric eels, all belonging to the genus Electrophorus. These fish inhabit murky, slow-moving freshwater environments such as swamps, marshes, and muddy riverbeds. Their elongated bodies, which can reach up to 8 feet in length, are well-adapted for life in these conditions. They possess poor eyesight, relying on other senses, including electrolocation, to navigate and hunt.

The electric organs are the most distinguishing feature of elektrikääsmeteks. These specialized organs make up a significant portion of their body mass and can produce a voltage of up to 600 volts. This electricity is used for a variety of purposes, including stunning prey, deterring predators, and even communication. They discharge electricity in pulses, which can be low-voltage for sensing their surroundings or high-voltage for defense and hunting.

Despite their formidable electrical capabilities, elektrikääsmeteks are generally not aggressive towards humans unless provoked or threatened. However, encounters can be dangerous, and a powerful shock can incapacitate or even kill a person. Their diet consists mainly of fish, amphibians, and small mammals.
