Ekstravertsus is the Estonian term for extraversion, one of the major dimensions in many personality theories, including the Five Factor Model. It describes a person’s tendency to seek social interaction, feel energized by engaging with others, and experience positive affect in social settings. The opposite end of the spectrum is introversion.

In contemporary models extraversion comprises several facets that together capture its breadth. Commonly recognized facets include warmth, gregariousness, assertiveness, activity, excitement-seeking, and positive emotions. Individuals high in ekstravertsus are typically sociable, talkative, and oriented toward external stimuli, while those low in ekstravertsus may be more reserved, reflective, or private.

Ekstravertsus is typically assessed with standardized questionnaires such as the NEO Personality Inventory or other personality scales, which measure both overall extraversion and its constituent facets. Twin and family studies suggest a substantial heritable component, with estimates often around 40–60 percent. Environmental factors, life experiences, and cultural context also shape how ekstravertsus is expressed in behavior and social interaction.

Cross-cultural research shows that although ekstravertsus is a relatively universal trait, its expression and social value vary. In some cultures, high extraversion aligns with social leadership and talkativeness, while in others more reserved behavior is preferred. In daily life and work, ekstravertsus can influence relationship formation, choice of occupations (for example, roles emphasizing communication and collaboration), and responses to social rewards.
