Earthworking refers to disciplines and activities that modify the surface of the earth to prepare sites, construct features, or shape landscapes. It encompasses the excavation, movement, grading, and compaction of soil, rock, and other earth materials. Typical operations include trenching, cutting and filling, embankment construction, backfilling, and surface finishing to achieve a specified grade, slope, and density. Earthworks are a core phase in civil engineering, construction, mining, and land development, often linking survey results to final surface conditions.

Techniques and equipment include use of heavy machinery such as excavators, bulldozers, graders, scrapers, and compactors, along with dump trucks and drilling rigs for foundation and drainage work. The principal methods are cut-and-fill grading, where material is removed from high areas and placed to raise low areas; trenching for utilities; benching and slope stabilization for stability; and drainage installation to manage water. Grade control is maintained through survey markers and digital models, and compaction is specified to achieve target density.

Planning and safety considerations accompany earthworking. Engineers prepare plans with volumes, balance between cut and fill, compaction requirements, and drainage designs. Quantities are estimated from cross-sections or digital terrain models. Environmental factors include erosion and sediment control, spoil management, and material reuse. Safety risks include trench collapse, falling debris, machine rollover, utility strikes, and exposure to dust. Compliance with standards and regulations, such as local building codes and occupational safety guidelines, governs procedures and inspections on site.
