Ear pads are the soft cushions that surround the drivers of headphones and headsets. Their main purposes are to provide comfort during extended listening, create a seal for passive noise isolation, and influence the perceived sound by shaping the ear-to-driver interface.

They are usually made from synthetic leather (pleather), protein leather, velour, microfiber, or suede. Leather options tend to be durable and provide a firmer seal but can feel warm; velour and microfiber are softer and more breathable but may wear more quickly. Pad thickness and foam density affect comfort and bass response.

Most over-ear headphones use circumaural pads that enclose the ears; on-ear models use smaller pads that rest on the ear. Attachment methods vary: pads may clip onto a ring, snap into slots, or screw onto a mounting. Replacements are often available from manufacturers and third-party suppliers.

Maintenance includes cleaning with a damp cloth and avoiding harsh solvents. Pads wear from sweat, oils, and compression, eventually becoming flat or cracked and losing isolation. Replacement intervals vary, but many users swap pads every 1–2 years with regular use. When replacing, confirm compatibility with size, shape, and mounting type.

The pad material and fit affect sound, especially bass extension and high-frequency leakage. A tight seal can enhance bass but reduce comfort, while a looser seal lowers isolation and can dull the low end. Replacing pads can restore comfort and acoustic performance.
