Pad

Pad is a versatile term describing a cushioning, protective, or flat surface used to provide support, insulation, or a place to rest or attach objects. It can refer to materials such as foam or rubber, or to a sheet or area designed for use.

A pad can be a bound block of paper used for notes, sketches, or drafts, commonly called a notepad or writing pad.

Pads are protective coverings worn on knees, elbows, or shoulders to absorb impact in sports, work, and safety equipment.

In electronics, a pad is a conductive area on a circuit board for mounting components or testing. A touchpad is a palm-sized input device on laptops.

A launch pad is a prepared platform from which rockets lift off. A landing pad is a designated surface for aircraft or spacecraft to touch down.

A sanitary pad or menstrual pad is an absorbent garment worn in underwear to collect menstrual fluid. Incontinence pads perform a similar function. In animals, paw pads are the soft, protective coverings on feet.

In upholstery, padding refers to foam or stuffing used to shape and cushion furniture; in packaging, pads cushion fragile items during transport.
