Dysplasia refers to abnormal cell growth that results in cells that differ in size, shape, and organization from their normal counterparts. This deviation from normal development can occur in various tissues and organs throughout the body. It is generally considered a precancerous condition, meaning it has the potential to develop into cancer, though not all dysplasias will progress to malignancy.

The causes of dysplasia are diverse and can include genetic factors, environmental exposures, infections, and chronic inflammation. For example, precancerous changes in the cervix, known as cervical dysplasia, are often linked to persistent infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). Similarly, chronic irritation or inflammation in other tissues can lead to dysplastic changes.

Options can include surgical removal of the affected tissue, cryotherapy (freezing), laser treatment, or simply close observation. Early detection and management of dysplasia are crucial for improving prognosis and reducing the risk of developing cancer.
