Dust suppression, or dust control, encompasses measures to reduce airborne dust from industrial, construction, mining, and agricultural processes, protecting worker health and the environment and reducing explosion risk. It includes methods to limit dust at its source as well as methods to capture or contain emissions.

The primary method is wet suppression, using water sprays, mists, or foams to bind particles so they settle out of the air. Dry suppression relies on chemical binders to cause particles to cohere. Enclosure, ventilation, and routine housekeeping also play important roles by reducing opportunities for dust to become airborne.

Common equipment includes spray bars, high- or low-pressure nozzles, misting devices, foam generators, and automated control systems that operate during loading, conveying, drilling, or processing. Dust control is often integrated with local exhaust ventilation and dust collection to remove particles from the air rather than merely limiting their dispersal.

Applications span mining, cement plants, steelworks, bulk-material handling, grain handling, and construction. Effectiveness depends on particle size, weather conditions, moisture tolerance, and process dynamics; coarse dust is generally easier to control than fine respirable dust. Water use, runoff, corrosion, and effects on wastewater require management, and chemical suppressants may raise handling or compatibility considerations. Regulatory frameworks often specify exposure limits and require system maintenance and documentation.
