Typical missions are designed for last-mile logistics, with the drone autonomously or remotely piloted to a predefined landing or drop point. Capabilities vary, but many systems are optimized for lightweight parcels and short to medium ranges, and pursue reductions in delivery times, fuel use, and road traffic.

Most drone delivery systems rely on a combination of aircraft, ground control, navigation, and sensing. Key components include autopilot and flight controllers, GNSS positioning, obstacle avoidance sensors, and geofencing, as well as cargo grips or compartments. Operations may be BVLOS or within visual line of sight, requiring regulatory waivers and robust safety cases. Power usually comes from batteries, with ongoing work on hydrogen fuel cells or hybrid designs; the design may be multirotor for vertical takeoff and landing or fixed-wing for longer range.

Applications span e-commerce and retail, healthcare and emergency medical supply chains, food delivery, and disaster relief. Notable pilots have included medical supply flights in remote regions, and commercial programs by companies such as Zipline, Wing, Amazon Prime Air, and UPS Flight Forward. In practice, drone delivery complements traditional logistics, handling urgent, low-weight items or operations where ground access is limited.

Regulation and safety are central to drone delivery. Authorities regulate airspace integration, aircraft certification, operator licensing, and privacy and noise standards. Trials commonly occur under special waivers or pilot programs while infrastructure like digital notice, weather monitoring, and air traffic coordination evolves. Widespread adoption depends on improvements in reliability, safety, public acceptance, and cost competitiveness relative to conventional delivery.
