doorvallen

Doorvallen is a Dutch verb with more than one common meaning. It most often refers to something physical that gives way or collapses, such as a roof, floor, or other structure. Etymology and usage notes: Doorvallen combines the prefix door- (through, completely) with vallen (to fall). The sense of "falling through" both in a literal and a figurative sense is reflected in modern Dutch usage. The verb is intransitive and does not take a direct object. It is used with topics like buildings or bodies of objects (the ceiling falls through) and with events like exams or plans (the exam fails; the plans fall through).

Common senses and examples:

- Physical collapse: Het plafond is doorgevallen tijdens de storm. De trap is doorgevallen. In present tense: Het plafond valt door.

- Failure in an exam or test: Ik ben door mijn examen gevallen. De toets is doorgevallen.

- Failure of plans or arrangements: De plannen vallen door. De onderhandelingen zijn doorgevallen.

Grammatical notes: In the present tense the prefix can separate: het plafond valt door. In the voltooid deelwoord is het doorgevallen, en men zegt vaak “is doorgevallen” voor een gebeurtenis die is verwerkt in het heden of verleden. Het gebruik is algemeen in zowel Nederlandstalige als Vlaamse varianten van het Nederlands.
