doorvallen
Doorvallen is a Dutch verb with more than one common meaning. It most often refers to something physical that gives way or collapses, such as a roof, floor, or other structure. It can also be used figuratively to describe failure in an examination, or the failure of plans or proposals to go through.
Etymology and usage notes: Doorvallen combines the prefix door- (through, completely) with vallen (to fall). The
- Physical collapse: Het plafond is doorgevallen tijdens de storm. De trap is doorgevallen. In present tense:
- Failure in an exam or test: Ik ben door mijn examen gevallen. De toets is doorgevallen.
- Failure of plans or arrangements: De plannen vallen door. De onderhandelingen zijn doorgevallen.
