A doorframe, commonly referred to as a door jamb, is the structural assembly that surrounds a doorway. It provides a mounting surface for hinges and hardware and forms the boundary between the interior and exterior spaces. A typical frame consists of two vertical jambs, a horizontal head, and, at the bottom of exterior doors, a sill. The frame is set within a rough opening in the wall, and the door is hung on hinges attached to the jambs.

Materials and finishes vary. Wood frames are common for interior doors, offering a warm appearance but susceptible to warping and moisture. Metal frames, including steel and aluminum, provide strength and fire resistance. Plastic or composite frames, such as uPVC, are valued for low maintenance and moisture resistance. A frame comprises jambs, the head, and sometimes a sill or threshold; additional elements include the strike plate, hinge mortises, stops, and weatherstripping. Decorative casing or trim surrounds the frame, and weather seals improve energy efficiency.

Installation processes: The frame is sized to fit a rough opening; it must be plumb and square and securely anchored to wall studs with fasteners, often with shims to adjust fit. In many cases, a door is prehung in a factory or on site. Proper alignment of hinges and strike plate ensures smooth operation and proper latch engagement. Exterior frames may include a waterproof sill pan and weather-resistant flashing.

Variants and considerations: Fire-rated frames are labeled to specific minutes and used where fire separation is required. ADA and building codes influence door and frame dimensions, including clear widths. Doors and frames may be hollow-core or solid-core, affecting sound and insulation. Hardware includes hinges, locksets, and strike plates installed into the jambs.

Maintenance and care: Inspect for loose fasteners, hinge sag, or rot in wood frames; reseal or repaint as needed; replace weatherstripping to preserve energy efficiency. Proper maintenance extends frame life and keeps doors operating reliably.
