Electronic or digital chimes may mimic bells or use synthesized tones and can often be adjusted for volume. Smart doorbells add features such as cameras, two-way audio, motion detection, and connectivity to apps or home automation systems.

Key components commonly include a doorbell button, a transformer or power source, a chime or speaker unit, and wiring or wireless communication modules. Proper installation involves selecting an appropriate transformer voltage, ensuring weatherproofing for outdoor components, and adhering to local electrical codes.
