Domesticating is the process by which humans bring wild species under long-term human control through selective breeding, management, and environmental modification, resulting in populations that are more useful, manageable, or compatible with human needs. It encompasses genetic, behavioral, and morphological changes that persist across generations. The term is often used to describe the broad shift from wild to domesticated states in plants and animals, though it can also refer to the ongoing human influence on a species’ evolution.

Domestication is distinct from taming. Taming refers to the behavior of individual animals becoming less fearful or aggressive toward humans, whereas domestication involves heritable traits that appear in a population over generations and persist even without direct human contact.

Historical scope and examples: The domestication of dogs from wolves predates many other domestication events and is thought to have occurred tens of thousands of years ago. In agriculture, domestication began around 10,000 years ago in multiple regions, with crops such as barley, wheat, rice, maize, and potatoes showing long-term selection for traits that aid cultivation and harvest. Domesticated livestock—sheep, goats, cattle, pigs, and chickens—exhibit traits like increased docility, synchronized reproductive cycles, and enhanced food production characteristics.

Mechanisms and outcomes: Domesticating relies on artificial selection, where humans preferentially breed individuals with desirable traits. Changes may include growth rate, body size, reproductive timing, seed retention, and behavioral shifts toward reduced fear of humans. The coexistence of humans and domesticates has driven a so-called domestication syndrome, a cluster of correlated traits.

Contemporary considerations: Ongoing breeding, genetic engineering, and selection continue to shape domesticated species. Concerns include maintaining genetic diversity, resilience to disease, and ecological impacts from widespread cultivation or keeping animals in intensive systems.
