Dolostoonid, or dolostones, are carbonate sedimentary rocks dominated by the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. They are closely related to limestone but contain significant amounts of magnesium-rich dolomite instead of calcite, which can influence their appearance, hardness, and weathering behavior.

Most dolostoonid form through dolomitization, a diagenetic process in which magnesium-rich fluids circulate through limestone and replace calcium with magnesium, converting calcite to dolomite. This can occur during burial or early diagenesis in carbonate platforms. In some settings, dolostones form as primary precipitates in shallow marine environments where the water chemistry favors dolomite formation.

Textures in dolostoonid vary from fine-grained, dense beds to thick-bedded or nodular forms. They may retain features of the original carbonate framework, including fossils in older rocks. Dolostones tend to be more resistant to weathering than pure limestone, though they can display significant porosity or karst features in particular environments.

Chemically, dolostones generally react more weakly with cold, dilute acids than limestone. Reaction is often noticeable only when the rock is powdered or treated with warmer acid, reflecting the stability of the dolomite mineral.

Uses and significance include their role as a source of crushed stone and aggregate for construction, as well as a dimension stone in some regions. Dolostones can also act as aquifers or reservoir rocks in certain geological settings. Globally, dolostoonid occur in many ancient carbonate sequences, with notable concentrations in regions such as the Dolomites (Italy) and North American carbonate belts.
