Diskantefekt, also known as the treble effect or high-frequency enhancement, refers to a perceptual phenomenon where higher frequencies are perceived as louder or more prominent than they actually are in the original audio signal. This can occur due to a variety of factors in audio playback systems.

One common cause is the inherent frequency response of loudspeakers and headphones. Many speaker designs exhibit a natural roll-off in their high-frequency output, and to compensate, manufacturers often boost these frequencies. This boost, while intended to restore a perceived flat response, can lead to a diskantefekt if overdone or if the listener's hearing is particularly sensitive to high frequencies.

Another contributing factor can be the acoustics of the listening environment. Reflections and absorptions of sound waves can alter the perceived balance of frequencies. In some rooms, high frequencies might be attenuated by soft furnishings, leading to an equalization process that boosts treble to compensate.

Furthermore, the recording and mastering process itself can introduce or exacerbate the diskantefekt. Producers may intentionally increase the level of high frequencies to add clarity, "air," or "sparkle" to a track. This is often done with the intention of making the audio sound more exciting or detailed on a wider range of playback systems.

Listeners can also contribute to the perception of diskantefekt. Individual hearing sensitivity varies, with many people experiencing a decline in high-frequency hearing as they age, a condition known as presbycusis. To compensate for this, some individuals might adjust the treble controls on their audio equipment upwards, further contributing to the effect. The diskantefekt can sometimes lead to listener fatigue or an overly harsh sound if the enhancement is too significant.
