Patrons usually enter in the evenings, and many discotheques operate under age limits or dress codes, with entry fees or cover charges common in some cities.

Derived from the French term discothèque, meaning a place for records (disques) to be played, the concept emerged in Europe in the mid-20th century and spread globally in the 1960s and 1970s. The disco era popularized the format, with rotating DJs, mirrored ball lighting, and a social emphasis on dancing to predominantly recorded music rather than live bands. Over time, discotheques diversified into venues focusing on electronic dance music, hip hop, and other genres, and many are now referred to as dance clubs rather than discotheques.

Discotheques have functioned as social spaces for youth and urban culture, often tied to fashion and nightlife economies. They face regulatory concerns such as noise control, licensing, safety, and crowd management, and debates around club culture include issues of drug use and public health. In many regions, contemporary venues use advanced sound systems, immersive lighting, and multi-room layouts, while retro-themed discotheques preserve the classic aesthetic of the earlier era.
