Discogenic is an adjective used to describe conditions or pain originating from a spinal disc. Spinal discs are the shock-absorbing cushions located between the vertebrae of the spine. These discs have a tough outer layer called the annulus fibrosus and a soft, gel-like center known as the nucleus pulposus. Over time, or due to injury, these discs can degenerate, tear, or herniate.

Discogenic pain refers to pain that arises directly from the damaged disc tissue itself. This type of pain is often characterized as a deep, achy sensation that may worsen with certain movements, prolonged sitting, or bending. Unlike nerve compression pain, which typically radiates down an arm or leg, discogenic pain is often localized to the back or neck.

Several factors can contribute to discogenic problems. Degenerative disc disease, a common condition associated with aging, involves the gradual breakdown of disc material. Trauma, such as a sudden impact or heavy lifting, can also cause acute disc injuries. Factors like obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking can further increase the risk of developing discogenic issues.

Diagnosis of discogenic pain can be challenging. It often involves a thorough medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies such as MRI to assess the condition of the spinal discs. Treatment strategies vary depending on the severity of the discogenic problem and may include conservative measures like physical therapy, pain medication, and lifestyle modifications, or in some cases, more invasive procedures.
