Dioxiinien is a term found in some non-English sources that is used to refer to dioxins; it is not a formal chemical name for a single compound. In established chemical literature, the term dioxin covers a group of related substances that includes polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and, in closely related discussions, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). The label is sometimes used in translation or colloquial contexts, but it does not designate a specific molecule by IUPAC standards.

Chemically, dioxins comprise planar, polycyclic aromatic structures with oxygen atoms in a dioxin-like arrangement. Their toxicity and environmental behavior depend on the exact pattern and number of chlorine substitutions (congeners). The Celsius-like term “dioxiinien” may be encountered when describing broad classes of these oxygen-containing, chlorinated aromatics rather than particular congeners.

Occurrence and formation of dioxin-like compounds typically result from high-temperature combustion processes where chlorine-containing materials are present. This includes waste incineration, certain industrial activities, and some natural events.
