Oxygen-containing is a descriptive term used in chemistry to refer to chemical species that include at least one oxygen atom in their structure. The label applies to both organic and inorganic compounds and highlights the influence of oxygen on properties such as polarity, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reactivity.

In organic chemistry, common oxygen-containing functional groups include alcohols (R–OH), ethers (R–O–R'), carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones), and carboxylic derivatives (carboxylic acids, esters, amides, anhydrides). Water (H2O) is the simplest example, and many sugars, alcohols, and carboxylic acids are typical representatives. Oxygen-containing compounds also span reactive classes such as peroxides, oxides, and sulfoxides.

Oxygen atoms contribute to high polarity and the ability to form hydrogen bonds, which strongly influence solubility, boiling and melting points, and reactivity. These features render oxygen-containing compounds essential in biology, where they appear in carbohydrates, nucleic acids, lipids, and many enzymes, as well as in industry, where they serve as solvents, monomers, plasticizers, and pharmaceuticals.

Classification by oxygen-bearing groups is a standard approach to predict behavior in chemical reactions and materials performance. Handling and safety depend on the specific substance; some oxygen-containing species, like peroxides, can be highly reactive or oxidizing, while others are relatively stable and benign.
