Dietdisease is a category of conditions in which dietary intake and nutrition strongly influence their development, progression, or outcome. It is not a single illness but a grouping used to describe diseases with diet as a major modifiable risk factor. The term is common in nutrition and public health to frame prevention and treatment around dietary change rather than pharmacological or surgical approaches alone.

Common examples include obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and certain cancers (such as colorectal cancer) where long-term dietary patterns affect risk. Other diet-influenced conditions include nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and, to a lesser extent, osteoporosis and dental caries. These diseases illustrate how macronutrient balance, energy intake, and micronutrient quality can shape health outcomes over time.

Dietdisease develops through mechanisms such as energy imbalance, glycemic impact, lipid quality, and excessive sodium or added sugars. Dietary fiber, fruits and vegetables, and micronutrients can mitigate risk, while obesity and insulin resistance often mediate the link between diet and disease. Genetics, physical activity, and environment interact with diet to determine individual susceptibility.

Evidence comes from cohort studies and randomized trials showing associations between dietary patterns and disease risk, and from interventions that improve risk factors. Diets rich in plant foods, whole grains, and unsaturated fats are repeatedly linked with lower risk.

Public health efforts promote dietary guidelines, labeling, and policies designed to make healthier choices easier and reduce the population burden of dietdisease.
