Core components typically include data input and preprocessing, a knowledge base or model library, an inference or reasoning engine, learning or adaptation mechanisms, and a user interface. Operation generally involves data collection, feature extraction, hypothesis generation, evidence evaluation, and uncertainty communication.

Common approaches encompass rule-based expert systems, probabilistic methods such as Bayesian networks, machine learning and deep learning models, and hybrid architectures that combine symbolic and statistical reasoning.
