Diagenesis refers to all physical, chemical, and biological changes that happen to sediment after it is deposited but before it is subjected to metamorphism. This process occurs at relatively low temperatures and pressures, typically near the Earth's surface. Diagenesis is a crucial stage in the transformation of unconsolidated sediment into solid sedimentary rock.

Key diagenetic processes include compaction, cementation, dissolution, replacement, and recrystallization. Compaction is the reduction in pore space due to the weight of overlying sediments, squeezing out water and reducing the volume. Cementation involves the precipitation of minerals, such as calcite, silica, or iron oxides, from pore water into the spaces between sediment grains, binding them together. Dissolution can occur when pore waters are undersaturated with respect to certain minerals, leading to their removal and the creation of secondary porosity. Replacement involves the substitution of one mineral for another. Recrystallization is the process where existing mineral grains change size, shape, or crystal structure without changing their chemical composition.

The specific diagenetic pathways depend on factors like the original sediment composition, the chemistry of the pore fluids, the temperature and pressure conditions, and the duration of burial. These processes significantly influence the porosity, permeability, and mechanical strength of the resulting sedimentary rocks, which in turn affects their potential as reservoirs for hydrocarbons or groundwater, and their behavior under stress. Diagenesis is a continuous spectrum of changes, with the boundary between diagenesis and metamorphism being defined by the onset of significant recrystallization and the formation of new metamorphic minerals.
