Designbaserte, or design-based, is a term used to describe approaches, studies, or projects that center on design as a fundamental component of inquiry and development. Such approaches combine design activities—creating artifacts, interfaces, or systems—with systematic investigation to improve understanding and practice. The design process itself generates hypotheses, data, and insights that are tested in real or simulated contexts.

Designbaserte methods are applied across fields such as education, human-computer interaction, product and service design, and urban planning. Common features include iterative cycles of design, implementation, observation, and refinement; collaboration between researchers and practitioners; and attention to context, artifacts, and user experience. Data may come from qualitative observations, interviews, artifact analysis, and performance metrics, collected across multiple cycles to inform successive revisions.

In education, design-based research exemplifies the approach by developing learning interventions and studying how they affect teaching and learning in authentic settings. In other domains, designbaserte work often emphasizes prototyping and user feedback to improve usability, adoption, and impact.

Critiques note that designbaserte work can be time-consuming and highly contextual, making generalization challenging. Successful practice relies on clear documentation of design decisions, contexts, and transferability, as well as sustained collaboration between designers, researchers, and end users.
