DecibelAban is a proposed logarithmic unit intended to express a signal’s strength relative to ambient background noise within a defined bandwidth and measurement window. It combines the familiar decibel concept with an explicit ambient reference, aiming to quantify how prominently a signal stands out from its background rather than measuring absolute power alone.

Calculation involves two power measurements taken in the same bandwidth and time window. Let P_signal be the average signal power, and P_ambient be the average ambient background power measured with no intentional signal present. The decibelAban is defined as dAb = 10 log10(P_signal / P_ambient). In practice, some formulations treat P_signal as the total observed power and P_ambient as a baseline floor, effectively making dAb the difference between the two decibel values.

Measurement procedure typically uses a calibrated microphone or sensor, with data collected over a fixed window and filtered to the specified bandwidth. The average powers are computed for the signal and for the ambient baseline, and the formula above is applied. An equivalent expression is dAb = dB(Signal) − dB(Ambient).

Applications and status: The concept is discussed in theoretical and experimental contexts to characterize environments with fluctuating noise, such as industrial settings or acoustically complex spaces. It is intended to complement standard metrics like decibels, signal-to-noise ratio, and A-weighted measurements. However, decibelAban is not a formal standard; there is no universal specification, and its use remains limited to exploratory research and vendor-specific implementations.
