SignaltoNoise refers to the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a fundamental measure of data quality in signal processing, electronics, photography, audio, and related fields. SNR compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise, indicating how detectable or reliable the signal is in the presence of noise.

The most common definition uses powers: SNR = P_signal / P_noise, where P represents average power. In practice, SNR is often expressed in decibels: SNR_dB = 10 log10(P_signal / P_noise). When dealing with amplitudes, some contexts use SNR = (A_signal)^2 / (A_noise)^2 or SNR_dB = 20 log10(A_signal / A_noise). In statistics and measurements, SNR can also be described as the ratio of signal variance to noise variance, under appropriate modeling assumptions.

SNR is a key criterion across domains. In telecommunications, higher SNR means clearer transmission and lower error rates. In imaging and photography, a higher SNR yields less grain or noise in the image. In audio, it correlates with dynamic range and perceived clarity. SNR is influenced by signal power, noise power, and bandwidth — noise power often increases with wider bandwidth, so expanding bandwidth without increasing signal power can worsen SNR. Sensor characteristics, quantization, and environment also play roles.

Improvements aim to raise signal power, reduce noise, or both. Techniques include amplification, shielding, cooling of detectors, filtering, averaging multiple measurements, and choosing appropriate bandwidth. Understanding SNR helps evaluate measurement limits and design systems with the desired level of signal fidelity.
