Databinding is a mechanism that connects user interface elements to data sources, enabling automatic synchronization of state between the UI and the underlying data model. It aims to reduce manual wiring code and promote a separation of concerns between presentation and business logic.

Bindings can operate in several modes. One-way binding updates the UI when the data source changes, but not vice versa. Two-way binding allows changes in the UI to update the data source and changes in the data source to update the UI. One-time binding initializes the UI from the data source and does not listen for subsequent changes. Bindings may be described as property bindings, collection bindings, event bindings, or command bindings, depending on what they connect.

Databinding is typically implemented via observer patterns and change notification. Frameworks provide binding infrastructures and syntaxes to express bindings declaratively. Examples include model–view–viewmodel (MVVM) approaches in desktop environments such as .NET WPF with INotifyPropertyChanged, as well as web frameworks like Knockout, Angular, and Vue. React emphasizes unidirectional data flow and often uses props and state rather than two-way binding, though binding concepts still appear in form controls and state management. Data converters or value transformers may be used to format data for display or to adapt UI input to the data model.

Benefits of databinding include reduced boilerplate, easier maintenance, and improved testability, as UI logic can be separated from business logic and kept in the binding layer. Challenges can arise from binding errors that are hard to debug, potential performance overhead, synchronization conflicts, and memory leaks if bindings are not properly managed in longer-running applications. Databinding is widely used in both desktop and web user interfaces to keep views in sync with data models.
