Daklatten refers to the horizontal battens used on pitched roofs to support and fix roofing materials such as tiles, shingles, or metal panels. They form a lightweight, ventilated lattice that transfers loads from the roof covering to the rafters while allowing moisture to escape and rain to shed.

Materials and construction commonly used for daklatten are softwoods such as pine, spruce, or fir, though metal battens are used in some modern applications. The timber is typically dried or treated to resist decay and insects. Battens are installed in evenly spaced rows across the rafters, creating a base for the roofing material and helping to maintain alignment and wind resistance. The choice of timber thickness and width, as well as the batten spacing, depends on the type of roof covering, local climate, and building codes.

Installation involves laying a continuous underlayment or roof felt first, then attaching the daklatten perpendicular to the rafters. Fastening is done with corrosion-resistant nails or screws, and battens must be straight and securely anchored to avoid warping or movement under load. Proper spacing ensures adequate ventilation and drainage and prevents water from seeping behind the roof covering.

Durability and maintenance focus on preventing moisture-related issues. Battens exposed to the elements should be inspected for rot, warping, or insect damage, especially in areas with high humidity or poor venting.
