Courtliness is a set of refined behaviors, speech patterns, and ceremonial practices deemed appropriate for members of a royal or noble court, and by extension for polite society. It emphasizes decorum, graciousness, attentiveness to rank, controlled self-presentation, and tasteful attire. Historically, courtliness arose from the confluence of chivalric ideals, court ritual, and the social function of early modern European courts to display power, hospitality, and order.

The concept was codified in etiquette and conduct manuals, with one of the most famous being Castiglione’s The Book of the Courtier (1528). Such works outlined the ideal courtier as well-mannered, self-possessed, educated in arts and conversation, capable of diplomacy, entertainment, and discreet service to superiors, while maintaining fit for courtly life.

Practices of courtliness include formal greetings and address, attentive hospitality, measured and tactful speech, discretion regarding rank and rank-related protocols, elaborate dress, and the ritualized forms of entertainment and ceremony that marked court life. While it reinforced social hierarchies, it also provided a shared language of interaction that facilitated governance and social cohesion within aristocratic circles.

Over time, as governance and society broadened, distinct courtly codes diminished in prominence, though elements of courtliness influenced broader etiquette and concepts of civility. Critics note that courtliness could be exclusive, performative, and gendered, sometimes masking power dynamics beneath polished manners. In contemporary usage, courtliness is often a historical term describing refined manners or ceremonial etiquette, rather than a comprehensive social code.
