Constraining is the act of imposing restrictions, limits, or controls on something. Constraints can be physical, logical, social, or normative, and they shape what is possible in a system, behavior, or decision. The term is used across disciplines to describe conditions that must be met or features that bound operations, configurations, or choices.

In mathematics and optimization, a constrained problem seeks to optimize an objective function subject to restrictions. The feasible set includes all variable values that satisfy the constraints. Techniques include Lagrange multipliers for equality constraints, and methods for inequality constraints; constraint satisfaction problems model such issues as variables with domains and relations.

In physics and engineering, constraints limit motion or configuration. Holonomic constraints depend only on coordinates and time, reducing degrees of freedom; nonholonomic constraints involve velocities or higher derivatives. Examples include a bead on a wire or a rolling wheel with no slip.

In computer science and operations research, constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) specify variables, domains, and constraints. Solutions assign values to variables that satisfy all constraints. Constraint programming is a paradigm that uses constraints as the basic modeling tool, with propagation and search to find feasible solutions.

In everyday and social contexts, constraining factors include budgets, resources, time, laws, and guidelines. Constraints help ensure safety, fairness, and feasibility but can limit options or flexibility. The term also appears in linguistics to describe conditions that limit permissible structures or interpretations.
