Trends in computer speed over time come from newer architectures, more cores, larger caches, faster memory, and faster storage, along with specialized accelerators. Users should select hardware based on workload: single-threaded tasks benefit from strong per-core performance, while multithreaded or data-intensive workloads benefit from parallelism and high bandwidth. Understanding the intended use helps interpret speed measurements.
