A columbarium is a structure or part of a building that contains niches for storing cremated remains in urns. The term derives from the Latin columba, meaning dove, and historically referred to buildings with alcoves or compartments. Today columbaria are commonly found in cemeteries, mausoleums, and churches, and may be standalone structures or integrated into larger architectural complexes.

Physically, a columbarium consists of a wall or series of walls whose niches hold urns. Niches are often arranged in tiers and may be enclosed behind glass or metal doors, with plaques or inscriptions identifying the deceased. Materials vary and can include stone, brick, concrete, and metal, sometimes with decorative facades. Some facilities offer private family niches or larger family vaults, while others provide community walls with individual spaces rented or purchased by relatives.

History and use have evolved over time. In ancient Rome, columbaria referred to above-ground structures with niches for cremated remains and later appeared in medieval and Renaissance architecture in various forms. Modern columbaria emerged as cremation became more common in the 19th and 20th centuries, offering a compact and often cost-effective alternative to traditional burial. They are now widespread in many parts of the world and can be found in secular cemeteries, crematoria, and religious institutions.

Legal and practical considerations include ownership rights, maintenance responsibilities, and adherence to local regulations on burial practices and perpetual care. Memorial plaques and inscriptions are common, serving as lasting markers for families. Columbariums provide a durable, space-efficient option for interment and commemoration in many cultural contexts.
