Materials that are considered chlorineresistant often include fluoropolymers and other high-performance polymers. Examples frequently cited are polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and other fluorinated plastics such as FEP, PFA, and PVDF, which show excellent chemical resistance to chlorine species. Some high-temperature plastics like PEEK also offer strong resistance to chlorinated solutions. Coatings, linings, and composites based on these polymers are commonly chosen for pipes, fittings, gaskets, seals, and tank linings in chlorinated environments. Certain metals, such as some stainless steels and nickel-based alloys, can provide good resistance when properly selected and maintained, though metal corrosion may still occur under aggressive or poorly controlled conditions.

Applications span water-treatment equipment, swimming-pool infrastructure, chemical processing vessels, and packaging lines that encounter chlorine-based sanitizers. Selection considerations include chlorine concentration, solution pH, temperature, exposure duration, mechanical stresses, and UV exposure, all of which influence long-term performance.

Limitations exist: no material is perfectly chlorine-impervious under all conditions, and prolonged exposure to high chlorine levels or extreme pH and temperature can lead to degradation, swelling, or loss of mechanical properties. Compatibility data and testing are typically consulted to ensure suitability for a given chlorine environment.
